United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland refers to the political union that existed between 1801 and 1922, comprising the entirety of the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) and the whole of Ireland. The Act of Union 1800 unified the separate kingdoms and parliaments of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom. However, significant tensions and conflicts, particularly the Irish War of Independence, led to the establishment of the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland) in 1922, leaving Northern Ireland as the only part of the island still within the United Kingdom, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
