Tay Bridge opened

The first Tay Rail Bridge was completed in 1878 and was a part of the East Coast Main Line. Its opening was a significant event as it was considered an engineering marvel of its time, spanning approximately 2 miles across the Firth of Tay, and connecting the city of Dundee with the suburb of Wormit in Fife. However, the bridge's design and construction had critical flaws. In 1879, just a year after its completion, the bridge collapsed during a storm while a train was passing over it, resulting in a tragic loss of lives. This disaster prompted advancements in bridge engineering and construction to prevent such failures in the future.
