Second Tay Bridge opened

The second Tay Rail Bridge, constructed adjacent to the ill-fated original, was opened on June 13, 1887, representing a monumental feat of engineering redemption after the tragic collapse of its predecessor in 1879. The construction of this new bridge was undertaken with meticulous attention to design, stability, and structural integrity to prevent the recurrence of such a disaster. Designed by William Henry Barlow and built using more robust materials and reinforced structural elements, the bridge spanned the Firth of Tay in Scotland, connecting Dundee and Wormit, and became a symbol of resilient engineering innovation, restoring confidence in bridge construction and ensuring safer rail travel across the estuary.
