Battle of Dun Nechtain
The Battle of Dun Nechtain (or Nechtansmere) took place on May 20, 685 AD, near the present-day village of Dunnichen in Scotland. Fought between the Pictish forces under King Bridei III and the invading Northumbrians led by King Ecgfrith, the battle was a decisive victory for the Picts. Ecgfrith, who underestimated the Pictish resistance, was killed in the battle, marking a significant setback for Northumbrian expansion. This pivotal clash solidified Pictish control over their territory and curtailed Northumbria's dominance in northern Britain for decades to come.
