1543

Treaty of Greenwich

The Treaty of Greenwich, signed on July 1, 1543, was an agreement between England and Scotland that primarily proposed a marriage alliance between Edward, Prince of Wales, and the infant Mary, Queen of Scots, with the aim of unifying the two kingdoms. However, despite its initial promise, the Scottish Parliament rejected the marriage proposal later that year. This rejection led to the 'Rough Wooing', a series of aggressive military campaigns by England attempting to enforce the marriage and a pro-English alliance, further straining Anglo-Scottish relations and reinforcing Scotland's alliance with France.
