1153 - 1164

Somairle's campaigns

Somairle mac Gilla Brigte, commonly known as Somerled, was a 12th-century warlord who emerged as the King of the Isles and Lord of Argyll, establishing himself as a significant power in western Scotland. In the mid-12th century, he led a series of campaigns against the Scottish monarchy, aiming to expand his territories and challenge the Scottish king's dominance in the region. Somerled's most notable military action was his 1164 invasion of Scotland, where he sought to capture the Kingdom of Scotland itself. However, he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Renfrew. Despite this setback, his legacy endured through his descendants, the Lords of the Isles, who continued to wield considerable power in the region for centuries.
