Scottish–Norwegian War
The Scottish–Norwegian War, spanning from 1262 to 1266, was a conflict between the Kingdoms of Scotland and Norway over control of the Hebrides and the Isle of Man. These island territories, under Norwegian dominion for centuries, became areas of contention as Scotland sought to expand its maritime influence. The war's pivotal battle, the Battle of Largs in 1263, saw Scottish forces repelling an attempted Norwegian invasion led by King Haakon IV. While the battle was inconclusive, it weakened the Norwegian position, leading to diplomatic resolutions. The conflict officially concluded with the Treaty of Perth in 1266, where Norway ceded the Hebrides and the Isle of Man to Scotland in exchange for a monetary payment, marking a significant territorial expansion for Scotland in the western isles.
