1472
Orkney and Shetland annexed
Orkney and Shetland became part of the Kingdom of Scotland in 1472. Originally, these island groups were possessions of the Norwegian crown, but they were pledged by Norway to Scotland as security against the dowry payment for Margaret, the intended bride of James III of Scotland. When the dowry was not paid due to Margaret’s death, Scotland annexed Orkney and Shetland.
