1039

Invasion of Northumbria

In 1039, the Scottish king, Duncan I, led an invasion into Northumbria, culminating in the Siege of Durham. This military campaign was an attempt by the Scots to exert control over the northern regions of England. However, the inhabitants of Durham, supported by the local militia, fiercely resisted the invasion. The siege proved unsuccessful for the Scottish forces, as they were repelled and forced to retreat. The failed siege and the subsequent losses weakened Duncan's rule, which eventually led to his death in battle against his own nobles a few years later.
