1746 - 1782

Illegal to wear tartan

The wearing of traditional tartan in Scotland was banned following the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. This ban was implemented with the Dress Act of 1746, which was part of the larger Act of Proscription. The intent was to suppress Highland culture and prevent further uprisings.

The ban on wearing tartan was repealed in 1782.
