Edward I's campaigns

Edward I's invasion of Scotland, commencing in 1296, was a pivotal episode in the long-standing tensions between England and Scotland. Motivated by Scottish alliances with France and the perceived challenge to his authority from the Scottish king, John Balliol, Edward launched a military campaign to assert English dominance. Swiftly capturing key locations including Berwick-upon-Tweed and Dunbar, Edward's forces overwhelmed the Scottish resistance, leading to John Balliol's abdication and the imposition of English rule over Scotland. This occupation, however, ignited a series of resistance movements and battles, marking the beginning of the Wars of Scottish Independence, which would span several decades.
