Portrait of Donald, by Jacob de Wet II circa 1684-1686
858 - 862

Donald I

Donald I, known as Domnall mac Ailpín, ruled Scotland from around 858 to 862 CE. He was the brother and successor of Kenneth I, the foundational king who united the Picts and Scots. While details of his short reign remain scant and are primarily sourced from later medieval chronicles, Donald's rule is considered a continuation of the early consolidation of what would become the Kingdom of Alba. His reign, though brief, played a role in the formative stages of the emerging Scottish identity and the integration of Pictish and Gaelic societies.
