17th-century portrait, when he was reckoned as Constantine IV
995 - 997

Constantine III

Constantine III, known as Causantín mac Cuiléin, ascended to the Scottish throne around 995 CE, following the death of Kenneth II, and ruled until about 997 CE. His reign, though short, was a tumultuous period marked by internal disputes and power struggles within the Kingdom of Alba. As the son of Cuilén, Constantine III's claim to the throne was contested, leading to conflicts with rivals. His kingship came to a violent end when he was killed in battle against Malcolm II, ending his brief yet contentious rule and paving the way for a new chapter in Scottish royal history.
