Charles I, was executed

Charles I was executed outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London. He was executed after being convicted of high treason by a High Court of Justice, arranged by the Rump Parliament, following the English Civil War. The war had been fueled by conflicts between Charles I and Parliament over issues such as the king's powers, religious freedoms, and constitutional matters. After his defeat in the war, the trial and subsequent execution of Charles I marked a rare moment in history where a reigning monarch was tried and executed by his own subjects, leading to a temporary abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England.
