Battle of Culloden

The Battle of Culloden, fought on 16 April 1746, was the climactic confrontation of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, which sought to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. Near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, the Jacobite forces, led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie", faced a well-prepared British government army commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. The battle was short but brutal, with the Jacobites suffering a decisive defeat in less than an hour. Culloden marked the end of significant Jacobite attempts to reinstate the Stuarts and resulted in a harsh crackdown on Highland culture and the Scottish clan system by the British government, leaving an enduring legacy in Scottish history and identity.
