Portrait of Queen Anne, 1705
1702 - 1714

Anne

Queen Anne ruled over England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1702 to 1714, and she became the first sovereign of the Kingdom of Great Britain after the Acts of Union in 1707. Anne was the second daughter of James VII, and her reign was marked by the further rise of the two-party system and significant developments in the War of the Spanish Succession. While she had many pregnancies, none of her children survived into adulthood. Her inability to produce an heir led to the end of the Stuart line. Queen Anne's reign also saw significant cultural contributions, with the establishment of Queen Anne-style architecture and the literary works of figures like Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift.
