Clans
Each clan, identifiable by its unique tartan, crest, and motto, denotes a collective bond uniting members under a common ancestral surname. These familial groups traditionally held sway over specific territories, with chieftains leading and offering protection. The clan system flourished until the 18th century, when political changes and the Highland Clearances led to its decline. Despite this, the sense of identity and community they foster remains a poignant aspect of Scottish identity today, with clan gatherings and games continuing to celebrate this storied legacy.
