Treaty of Paris

The Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3, 1783, marked the official end of the American Revolutionary War and recognized the independence of the United States from Great Britain. In addition to affirming U.S. sovereignty, the treaty set the boundaries between the new nation and the British North American colonies. The British also agreed to evacuate all of their soldiers from American territory. The Mississippi River was established as the western boundary of the U.S., and fishing rights off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador were granted to the United States. The treaty was a pivotal moment in American history, ensuring the birth of a new, independent nation.
