Late Glacial / Early Holocene

The Late Glacial period in Scotland represents the transition from the icy conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the warmer conditions of the Holocene.

The Holocene is the current geological epoch that began approximately 11,700 years ago, following the end of the last major ice age (the Pleistocene epoch). The Early Holocene period marked significant changes in climate and environment. As temperatures rose, ice sheets retreated, and the land began to recover, allowing for the establishment of diverse ecosystems. Woodlands expanded, and early Mesolithic hunter-gatherer populations began to inhabit the area, exploiting coastal and terrestrial resources.
