Interregnum

The Interregnum (1649–1660) in British history marked a period of republican government after the execution of Charles I following the English Civil War. Oliver Cromwell, a prominent military and political leader, dominated this era, eventually taking the title of Lord Protector. The period was marked by strict Puritan moral codes, significant military campaigns in Ireland and Scotland, and substantial political experiments, including the establishment of the Commonwealth of England. The Interregnum concluded with the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, marking the beginning of Charles II's reign, which aimed to heal the rifts caused by the civil wars and the subsequent republican rule.
