1688
Glorious Revolution
The Glorious Revolution of 1688 was a pivotal event in British history where James VII, the last Roman Catholic monarch, was overthrown, and William II of Orange-Nassau and his wife, Mary II, were invited to take the throne. This revolution was "glorious" because it was achieved with relatively little bloodshed in England. It marked the beginning of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy in Britain, with the Crown becoming more subject to the law and to the Parliament.
