King George II in coronation robes, c. 1727
1727 - 1760

George II

George II was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1727 to 1760, the second monarch from the House of Hanover. His reign was marked by a continuation of the shift towards a constitutional monarchy, with the government being primarily led by his ministers, most notably Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first de facto Prime Minister. Internationally, his reign saw several significant wars, including the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Notably, George II was the last British monarch to lead an army into battle, at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. Domestically, his relationship with his son, Frederick, Prince of Wales, was tumultuous, mirroring the strained father-son dynamic he had with his own father, George I.
