1093 - 1097

Donald III

Donald III, known as Domnall Bán mac Donnchada or Donald Bane, ruled as King of Scotland in two separate periods, first from 1093 to 1094 and then from 1094 to 1097. Following the death of his brother Malcolm III, Donald ascended to the throne but faced challenges from rival claimants, notably his nephew Duncan II, Malcolm's son. During his reign, Donald's opposition to Norman influence in Scotland was a defining characteristic. However, his rule was marked by instability, with Duncan briefly usurping him in 1094. After regaining the throne later the same year, Donald's second stint was short-lived, ending in 1097 when he was deposed and imprisoned by another nephew, Edgar. He spent the rest of his life in captivity and died around 1100.
