Battle of Philiphaugh

The Battle of Philiphaugh, fought on 13 September 1645 during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, marked a turning point in Scotland as Covenanter forces, commanded by Sir David Leslie, confronted and decisively defeated the Royalists led by James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose. Occurring near Selkirk, the surprise attack by the Covenanters caught Montrose's forces off guard, resulting in a swift and resounding victory for Leslie. The aftermath saw the capture and execution of numerous Royalist officers and Irish allies. This defeat halted Montrose's campaign, curtailed Royalist dominance in Scotland, and strengthened the Covenanter hold on the Scottish government.
