Battle of Falkirk

The Battle of Falkirk, fought on 22 July 1298, was a significant engagement during the First War of Scottish Independence. King Edward I of England, in response to previous defeats and seeking to quash Scottish resistance led by William Wallace, marched his forces to confront the Scottish army at Falkirk. The English utilized their longbowmen to devastating effect against the Scottish schiltrons (circular formations of pikemen), breaking their defenses. This overwhelming use of archers led to a decisive English victory. The defeat at Falkirk marked a setback for the Scots and particularly for Wallace, who subsequently resigned as Guardian of Scotland.
