Battle of Bothwell Bridge

The Battle of Bothwell Bridge, fought on 22 June 1679, was a critical engagement during the Covenanter rebellions in Scotland. Occurring near Hamilton in South Lanarkshire at Bothwell Bridge, the battle saw a large Covenanter force, emboldened by their recent victory at Drumclog, confront a well-prepared Royalist army led by the Duke of Monmouth. The Covenanters, despite superior numbers, suffered from internal divisions and were poorly coordinated. As a result, the Royalist forces achieved a decisive victory, effectively quashing this phase of the Covenanter uprisings. The aftermath witnessed severe reprisals, with many Covenanters captured, executed, or imprisoned, marking a somber period in Scotland's religious and political struggles.
