Battle of Ancrum Moor
The Battle of Ancrum Moor, fought on 27 February 1545 near Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, was a significant conflict during the "Rough Wooing" period, an attempt by England's Henry VIII to force a marriage between his son Edward and the young Mary, Queen of Scots. English forces under Sir Ralph Eure invaded Scotland, causing devastation. In retaliation, Scottish forces led by the Earl of Douglas and the Earl of Arran ambushed the English at Ancrum Moor. Despite being outnumbered, the Scots used the terrain to their advantage, routing the English and inflicting heavy casualties, including the death of Sir Ralph Eure. The battle was a significant Scottish victory during a tumultuous period of Anglo-Scottish relations.
